2012 QX56. Power folding passenger mirror, can be manually folded but when ignition is turned on, the mirror swings past the middle position and to the completely forward folded position. It may be manually moved to proper position
When the Drivers mirror swings from the folded position, as it reaches the middle positon it locks into place. Not so the passenger side.
I cannot figure out the mechanism that locks the mirror into the useful position.

what do you mean "middle position"? the mirrors have two positions -- open and closed.
One would think that is true and It should stop in the open position, that which allows seeing to the rear, but it continues until it is completely forward and the mirror is positioned completely outward. Useful for passersby to check their hair but no good for seeing to the rear.
There is no detent at the middle, or useful position.
The driver's mirror, when it moves from the closed position, clicks solidly into place when the proper position is reached. The passenger mirror moves from folded in, past the normal position and continues without stopping until it's completely forward with no pause at the useful open position.
The inboard mount has a square depression with two tiny slits at the front and back. I suggest there is a spring-loaded device with a sort of rounded blade that rides in those little slits and which is supposed to stop and stabilize the mirror at the proper position. Hard to know.

My power fold is broken as well, and has been for a long time.

The dealer wanted over $1200 for the entire mirror assembly. That wasn't even with install, and they claimed they don't sell just the power fold motor.

I've since found the power fold motor on eBay and also this fantastic instructional on YouTube that walks you thru replacing the broken gear(s) in the old assembly.

Since the project requires removing the door panel and taking apart the entire mirror, it looks like a full day, so I've yet to get around to it.

Good luck!

Thanks. I had watched that entire 30 minute video just to see what was involved. Since this mirror operates through 180 degrees I don't think it's the gears and since, as you said, it looks like an all-day job, I'm now looking for a mirror "For Parts" that I can dismantle to understand the locking mechanism before I jump in feet first.
Thanks again

Is there a way to lubricate the mirror(s)? The driver side on mine has a kind of "ratcheted" movement to it when it shifts up and down when backing the truck up.
