ive had a
Nissan armada (2008) that had pretty much the same nav system. this system in the new Q is better in terms of speech recognition. it also add a couple of new features such as weather, etc.
there is a tutorial you can use that will let you know if you are speaking/saying the proper words correctly to the unit. perhaps give it a whirl?
tips:
when it beeps to acknowledge you to input, wait about 1.5 seconds before you speak. this gives the unit time to get ready.
use "zero" and not "oh" for the number 0.
you can press the button with the mouth and audio waves on the steering wheel to "cut to the chase" and enter your voice commands quickly.
using the advanced mode will give you more options but the system can have a bit more errors in the decoding of your voice since you could be speaking about any number of commands.
when i used the
armada, it took me a minute to speak the language of the car

but once i mastered it, its been no issues since.
i just moved to LA so i need the gps nearly daily and it has not failed me at all. in some parts of the country it may not have all the updates but its not the fault of nissan, its the local area that sends this update data to these services that update maps. plus each car company has to add their own software and updates to the map data and this can add some delay to the updates being ready.
the system is entirely hard drive based so yes updates will happen via the USB port on the truck. you go to navteq's site, pay the cost to get a code. that code is taken to your dealer where they enter the code into the consult which speaks to the nissan server, checks the code against its database, and if its OK will then download the updates direct to the HDD.
this process takes just under an hour but i think nissan/infiniti may charge an hour labor?
you cant do this on your own. it has to be done thru nissan/infiniti.
here is the link to the site that you will purchase the code:
http://www.navigation.com/is-bin/IN...ShowAllProducts=YES&PersistNavigationMenu=YES
if this does not work, just go to
http://www.navteq.com/ then click on store up at the top.
check back periodically as nissan/infiniti will not alert you to an update.
