Carmax replaced the steering rack in my '06 M35 when I bought it about 2 years ago. I've set the steering wheel where I want it, and turned off the auto adjuster so it stays in place when I get in and out.
lately, however, I've noticed about an eighth inch of vertical play in the steering column. It's there when parked, and while I drive. It drives just fine. Is this something to be concerned about? It isn't getting worse, but might be an expensive fix for something that can just be ignored?

I fixed it myself.

There are just 3 screws that hold on the top cover, over the turn signals, and the windshield wipers. Under that, I could see the right hand pivot screw had backed out about 3 turns until it hit a cable mounting bracket. I used a long nosed vise grip to retighten it. There is now zero vertical play in the steering wheel..
BYW, the shop est. was $688.00...Infinity dealer.
