what's the best way of jump starting a car?

Case in point... kid left the lights on in the other car while at school, needless to say, dead battery when going to start the car. Luckily had AAA come out to give a jump. Now, had the car been at home I'd jump started, but are there terminals, outside the battery area to hook up the cables to the QX56?? If not, what's the cleanest way to do it?

are you asking to jump start the Q using another car...

OR

jump starting another car with the Q as the source of the juice? :D

there are no terminals other than the ones on the battery itself.

depending on which car is doing the jump, determines how you set it up...

The times that I needed the boost (which has been so far twice) the Infiniti Roadside guy brought a power pack and hooked it up to both terminals.

I'm a little puzzled by the part of the question that asks if there are terminals anywhere outside of the battery area. Does any car have auxiliary terminals that make a good connection for jumper cables? I've never seen something like that so I'm curious.

Also, the owner's manual has the correct procedure for connecting jumper cables.

Yes. Many cars have alternate jump start connection posts. This is done to protect the battery in the event someone hooks the cables up wrong or creates some other type of electrical short-circuit.
My 05 Silverado Duramax has a seperate hot post and you can use any part of the frame as the ground. That being said it has proven difficult to get enough juice to jump other vehicles that way so I typically use the battery posts. Since they are side posts some cables make this a bit challenging as they will sometimes pop off the terminal with the weight of the cables pulling on the clamps.

Interesting. I've never seen that before. Where do they put the secondary hot post?

Yup... I've seen alternate hot/cold post on several cars. Can't recall which ones exactly (Disclosure... my memory is slipping.. ssshhhhhhhhh)

Yes.. I wanted to know the correct method of jumping starting my kids car with my QX (and was looking to see if there were "outside" mounts to attach the cables to for the QX rather than directly to the battery).

Roughyear.... keep that memory from slipping, though on second thoughts, sometimes forgetting is not a bad thing:D
Personal example I had was our first volvo XC 90 after I left headlight on for a day at work - ; battery in the back, jump terminal (+) under the hood, (-) would be exposed metal...

With regards to what the best was is to jump starting a car, I took the liberty of quoting from the porsche Manual as it clearly recommends in which succession to connect and disconnect cables. I had to refer to the manual after...again running down batteries. I expect the sequence should apply to other vehicles - but obviously can not guarantee that.

Connect the positive lead (red) to the positive terminal A of the discharged battery first, then connect it to the positive terminal of the donor battery.
Connect the negative lead (black) first to the negative terminal of the donor battery, then to the ground point B.
Leave the engine of the donor vehicle running at a higher engine speed.

Start the engine.
An attempted start using jump leads should not last more than 15 seconds. Then wait for at least one minute.
With engine running:
Disconnect the negative lead from the ground point B first, then from the negative terminal of the donor battery.
With engine running:
Disconnect the positive lead from the positive terminal of the donor battery first, then from the positive terminal A of the discharged battery.

I've always done the connections: Cables to Positive (+) of Donor then Negative (-) of Donor..... then.... Positive (+) of Dead battery then to the frame of the Dead battery's car.

No wonder I was always getting the spark/firework show with the cables...
