most overhead camshaft engines are belt driven, check and see if the timing covers are plastic, the belt should be access able after removing various covers. Note most of these engines are zero tolerance. This means if the engine is turned over with the belt off or broken engine damage may result. If you attempt this job yourself do not turn over the motor! after removing the belt. If this car that you are thinking of buying already has a broken belt or missing belt. The engine probably has damage! So if it is not running and you are told all that it needs is a timing belt. Be warned! Could be very expensive to repair.

Technically all the timing belts are outside the engine, -- however that doesn't mean that you will be able to see them without taking off some sort of covers to gain access! And visual inspection of timing belt may be of no use at all to you!
You are better off to know when the timing belt was last changed , here is where service records are of value. If it is not known, and a "service garage" says it shows "some wear-or aging",-- I would change it,. Some engines do not have "relief" clearance areas for crankshaft to turn over if camshaft doesn't! Valves hitting on top of pistons while engine rotating is disasterous to pistons as well as the valves, (and head), which can turn out real expensive!
It is better to be cautious, than sorry, - the end result will be a whole lot cheaper!

first you gotta drain your coolant, out of the radiator and engine, then remove the clutch fan and shrowd, then remove the three belts in front of the engine. Remove the hoses from the tranny to the radiator, makes a world of difference in clearance. Then remove the crankshaft pulley bolt, you can't mistake this bolt its big, then using a puller and a couple metric bolts that don't come with the pullers, pull the crankshaft pulley off, then its as simple as removing bolts from the cover as long as you removed both of the radiator hoses from the engine, and the snouts as well. then you'll be able to get a real good look at your timing belt, and yes it is a timing belt, not a chain.
