infiniti j30 stiff steering?

my 94 infiniti j30 steering wheel feels stiff. I dont see any sign of power steering fluid leak and i have enough fluid in it. Last night, it surprisingly became soft and then went back to being stiff after a little while of driving. Does anyone have any clue as to what might be wrong with it. Is it something i can take a look at before taking it to the shop and getting outrageously charged?

You already have, but once again check the power steering system for leaks, correct fluid level, and overall damage.

Does the engine make a whining sound or any sounds at all when turning the steering wheel?

It would also be safe to check the front steering linkage assembly ESPECIALLY the steering rack itself for any damage and proper lubrication.
