Went downtown Detroit to Ford Field a couple weekends back for a concert. Perfect storm as it was a big concert, Tigers playing night game, event at the theatre. Surface parking was $50 so I opted for an underground garage at $30. Height says 6'6". I figure I'm cutting it close but I can make it. Pay the attendant after getting assurance from him I would be ok. Lol.
He says both top and 2nd levels are full so go to bottom level. Make it down there. By the time I'm at the third level my wife is hyperventilating...
I'm feeling a little like Macguyver. Got parked. Had a great time. Then we headed out...Made it almost to the first level in the exit ramp and wouldn't you know it, they had replaced the existing sprinkler system piping with a full size diameter larger pipe in the section over the right side of the ceiling. I tell my wife we are going to hang it and theres nothing I can do but go slow and hope whatever it drags off I can repair or replace. Fortunately due to the coating on the crossbars and the turtle speed at which I drug the pipes across I came away with some bright red paint and a few marring scratches that are only visible when looking down on the roof rack from above. It took me almost an hour with a cleaning agent and scratch remover to undo the damage as best I could.
In all of my life never had that happen and unlikely it would ever occur again.
Note to others: I've got 20" tires and while the tire height on the 22's isn't significantly higher it may pose an issue.
This was the only time I could have ever used the H1 Hummer's air inflate/deflate option for my tires. I was ready to bleed out some air if I would have had a way to put any more back in to establish a bit more clearance.
