Disc Format Error, DVD Player

I have a 2004 Infiniti QX56. I have a 3 year old and the DVD player is great for travel. However, out of the blue when I put a DVD in, I receive the message, Disc Format Error. What does this mean?

Does the error message come up with all DVD's or just a certain one?
