We drove a QX80 a month ago and really liked. Sadly dealer sold it while we were driving it. Found an ‘18 with 96k we’re interested in now. Some of the issues people have posted online are concerning. This is a 1 owner for $21k. I read 18 is one of the good years to buy. Biggest concern is engine problems I’ve read about (timing/fuel pump). I realize you see more problem posts than good ones. Who has an 18 or qx80 in general that they love? What should i watch for on test drive? I know to watch for rpm bounce when shifting. Thx

Do you really need to run super unleaded or is mid grade ok too?

i had a 2012 qx that i drove it like i stole it. had it for 96k miles. never gave me one problem.

you can run lower octanes, but you will have diminished engine performance as the computer will retard the engine to prevent pre detonation and knock. i always ran 91 (highest here in CA) but on occasion i ran 100 octane and it was like driving a rocket!

Thx marc, we’ll run premium. We bought it, seems awesome. On the way home it used 1/2 tank of gas, 2.5hr drive, but my Ram with a 5.7L only used 1/2 tank both ways. That can’t be right. I read somewhere that the gas gauge drops abnormally fast to 1/2 tank.

If it is real, is there a fix for it? Drives like a dream tho

it will DRINK fuel for sure
🤓 as its a thirsty cuss. when i had my 2012 qx, i got like 14-16 mpg. it was my daily driver. i dont think there's anything wrong. perhaps nissan is more conservative on its petrol reading than american vehicles.

one thing you can do is the ECM reset. what this does is clears the shift points and other driving variables from the computer. it will then re-learn your driving habits. usually you notice more bottom end and snappier shift points. the way you do this is by timing of key on/key off /pedal presses to do this. ECM reset . sign up over there as well an introduce yourself. post up photos of your ride too!

congrats on your new vehicle! i have no doubts you will enjoy driving it. i loved my qx. i had the hbmc/fully loaded and it drove like a sports car!

Thx Marc, I filled tank this morning and using apple maps distance, we got 14.5mpg so i’m not worried now. We love it. Hopefully we got a good one. So far so good but having my mechanic look it over today for anything they might not have fixed.

I run regular unleaded and get 16-17mpg with mixed city/hwy driving. I take it pretty easy on the throttle so if you're enjoying the power of the engine (which is easy to do:)) somewhere around 15mpg is probably about right.

I'm still very happy with my '17 that we've had for 7 years. The one thing I would do is bypass the IPDM (Intelligent Power Distribution Module) so that the alternator charges the battery all the time. Here's a post that shows you what to do. The whole thread is long but will explain the reason for the mod.
