Anyone else have issues shifting into or out of gear? Our QX80 is garaged and sometimes (warm or cold) is hard to get it out of park, into Reverse, or back into park. It happened to my wife today after driving it for 90 minutes, and she literally had to move the car back and forth in a parking lot before she could finally get it to shift into Park.

We're like 185 miles from the nearest dealership....they're going to send a porter to get it next Friday.

Just wondering what I might expect this to be.

Car has just under 5,000 miles on it now.

well is it on a hill/incline? if so then i can see why this may be an issue.

if parking on a hill. put the park brake on FIRST BEFORE you put it into park. should be much easier.

but no i have not had that issue and i have a 2012. prior io had a 2006 and 2008 armada and as long as i did that sequence, i had no issues.

if this is happening on flat land, then take it in for service as that is NOT proper.

Totally flat, not on an incline. Not in "4wd locked hi" mode either, so it's not binding up.

well a trip to the dealer is in order as i dont ever experience that on flat land.

Mine does the same thing and I'm going to have to take it to the dealer. At one time,I thought I was going to break the lever..sigh.
Mine is 2011 with about 160xxxKM on it.
If you beat me to the dealer, kindly post what they find out.
Thanks.

I had a 12 and now a 15. Neither ever presented any shifting resistance when parked or parking after driving. Close to 80k on the 12. Almost 20k on the 15.
Daily driven so that may keep the issue from presenting?
Either way let us know what they find.

Yup,took mine in to the dealer as my extended warranty was just ending so I had them take care of any little problem and annoyance.
The result ? Nothing wrong with the shifter, apparently I have to really depress the brake pedal very hard..😮 and they were right...it does engage or release much better now,it's a heavy truck.I didn't think it will require that much effort.

Dealer never returned my 2x calls to get in for service (!?) so ours hasn't been looked at. I've told my wife to depress the brake extra hard if she experiences this again, until I can get it in.

LOL "extra hard". ive never had to press the pedal extra hard to shift out of gear.

if you listen at the shifter, when you press the brake pedal, you should hear (maybe feel if you are touching the shifter?) the solenoid release that lets the shifter move out of its gear. pressing EXTRA HARD on the brake is not going to make any difference as this is an electronic mechanism and not mechanical.

could be the shifter is not lining up in the gear under the shifter finisher, or the solenoid that release the shifter may need to be realigned or maintenanced /greased.

Is the solenoid right under the trim piece, or is it internal to the transmission???

Lol...didn't really believe it needed that much pressing,I was scratching my head when I got home but then again their idea of depressing hard from my experience with other maybe different.
I also think even though it's electronic, the weight of the truck plays a role and how and where it's parked. I was basically just 'dubbing' on the break before until now.
I'm going to keep an eye on things,it might just also be the stuff you mentioned that are worn. What I should have done when I went to the dealer, was to check out another QX for the shifting.

if you do my little exercise: press the brake pedal "normally" and not "Extra hard", you should feel/hear the solenoid release. if it does and it's still hard to get out of gear, you have some mechanically wrong with the car.

OK. I'll check it this weekend!:)

I can hear the solenoid release, and the shift effort was high this morning, so it must have some sort of mechanical thing going on. Sigh...........

yes it could be a misaligned shifter or linkage.

i assure you this is not supposed to be hard to do. putting the car in drive (or any other gear) from park, even on a hill, should not cause you to need super human strength. pressing on the pedal "extra hard" is also misleading. unacceptable for a dealer to say that.

the button on the shifter should be easy to depress as well. should not require much (if any) effort. if its hard to depress, that may be the issue.

if you can, go to the dealer and test drive another qx80...

The odd thing is that it only happens sometimes. 95% of the time, it's like butter. The other 5%, it has much more effort (button is always easy, just effort to move the lever). Dealer is almost 3 hours away and I don't have time to take it in right now, and I also don't want to take a day off of work, drive it all the way there and have it behave perfectly for them. I took a video of it. I just tried for a half hour to post it to YouTube and it keeps erroring out. I can send it via text from my phone if anyone wants to see it, just PM me your ##.

upload it to google or vimeo.

still sounds like the linkage from the shifter to the tranny is misaligned.

yeah its supposed to be like butter. i mean its muscle memory. you should not even know you are shifting out of gear.

well since you have video proof, take THAT into the dealer and have them open things up. you are under warranty so take the time now to look into it before something falls off/breaks and you are stranded...

awesome video.

the solenoid is not the issue and it seems as you shifted in and out more it got slightly easier.. suggest some misalignment on the cable/perhaps the gear selector section under the boot finished needs greasing/lubricating?

i can see you having to manipulate that on a hill or with the trans being under a load in park, but on level ground? no sir...

just my opinion form viewing the video....
