Good evening! Last week after intense research I purchased me a 2012 QX56 and love the SUV. I travel a lot for work and have put 1500 miles on it already. I changed fluids, added tires and roof rack and it’s a dream to drive…until today. I noticed the idle was fluctuating maybe 100-150 rpms since purchase but ran great. Well today the SES light came on and I noticed idle was high, around 1100 rpms. I immediately thought the dreaded catalytic converter issues(I wish now). So I ran down road to AZ and pulled codes , p0087 and 0090. Now it has low power so I researched and it looks like the bucket for the high pressure pump has failed , needing to be replaced along with the camshaft assembly as well. Also the inside of timing cover needs to be removed to check for more fragments etc. currently I’m in Danville Illinois and don’t know of any decent mechanics. Anyone have any suggestions as to where I might be able to have my vehicle repaired. If it weren’t for the camshaft needing timing, I could do it myself here at the hotel. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

UPDATE:
No one has responded but I figured I will continue to log this experience and maybe it will help someone in the future. I did a good bit of reading the day this happened and determined I would be able to drive it the 50 miles to Lafayette with mechanics that can actually fix this thing. Worst case scenario I would put another lifter bucket on it and it would last long enough to get it home or to a shop. I went to Defouw Nissan in Lafayette and got the lifter bucket and put it in the glovebox. I found a pretty reputable shop this morning that said to bring it in on Thursday. I’m guessing the lift bucket crumbled in fashion where it didn’t make contact with the timing chain, sprockets, etc. It idles around 650rpm, which I believe is a little low. Also it doesn’t have the pep(I haven’t tried either) but it will get you around town fine. Thankfully I’ve only had to drive it to town and to shop 5 miles away.

At least you have an idea and are prepared for what the worse case scenario could be. When you get to the shop, have them check fuel psi coming from the in-tank low pressure fuel pump. A failing low pressure fuel pump, which doesn't provide enough fuel to the high pressure fuel pump can also trigger those DTCs. Idle at 650 is actually within spec since it's supposed to be 600 rpm, +/- 50 rpms.

I'm taking it in tomorrow morning.... Have to work a little late today, but as soon as they get diagnosis I will update. It would be nice if you're right and the low pressure pump is shot!

Got truck to reputable shop and the bucket had hole worn in bottom. Shop is tearing down to inspect for metal shavings and see if a new short block/used engine may be needed. This is ridiculous a simple fuel pump part can grenade a motor…wow.

Shop got started on repair last week. Had codes for timing chain as well as low fuel pressure. New chain kit, fuel pump and everything in between. Unfortunate but it is being repaired correctly

So what did it end up costing you?
