Why is it when I switch my lights to auto that they automatically turn on when I start the car? Shouldn't the lights go on only at dawn/dusk/really dark days? In the options it allows me to adjust the light sensitivity but doesn't make sense of its always on. I didn't see anything about day time running lights.

sounds like you dont have them on auto, but "on".

i.ve a 12 and if i put the on auto they only come on based on the photo sensor on the dash.

the car does not have daytime running lights. if you are on canada then i think they do, but in the us its not a requirement. i cant speak for the 14+ though...

First...make sure you aren't in any shade...just the slightest shade will cause them to come on when first starting. Also on the 2011 if you have the fog light switch on it overrides auto and the headlights will come on.

Amazing the fog light switch is what was overriding the auto feature. The dealership was insistent I had DRL and I knew I didn't. Thanks I just tried it out and its operating normally. My M35 turns both the lights and fog lights on with the auto position and sensor and the fog lights don't override that feature like my qx56.

Yeah...that was something that they changed in the BCM for some reason and I think it's only for the 2011 models...my 2011 M37 does the same thing.

My 12 was like that as well. Thankfully the 15 I have now has DRL's which I find absolutely critical for safe driving.
I want people to know where I am at all times. So many distracted drivers on the road these days.
I also wish the US Auto group or whatever would make it mandatory for all vehicles headlights/taillights to come on when the windshield wipers are operating in any function. That would save a lot of lives over time as people hammering down the freeway will run all up on a slower driving vehicle without lights on. Bam. Instant freeway pile up.
Saw three of these last week while back in Michigan during a micro burst thunderstorm on 94 near Ann Arbor.

I can NOT stand DRL.. they're always set to HIGH BEAM and are freckn blinding coming towards you or in the rear view mirror.... !!!

I would rather someone complain because of seeing my lights than after the fact because they couldn't.
If DRL's are blinding don't stare at them. Lol. Just kidding. They are hard not to stare at for sure.
