Hi All,

I just wanted to post my recent experience on a very long drive with two different travel trailers in hopes that it might help others thinking of using this excellent vehicle for towing. It is very capable indeed.

I negotiated a deal to good to pass up in Ohio and I happen to live near Denver in Colorado, this meant a 2800 mile round trip journey in 4 days.

I had a 21ft Crossroads Slingshot with a dry weight of 3500 lbs and a hitch weight of around 520 lbs (this was my trade in).

The new trailer is a Crossroads Sunset Trail 26BH reserve. This is a 30.5 ft trailer with a dry weight of 5900 lbs and a real hitch weight right around 840lbs. THis puts it right at the limit of the QX56 (only for hitch not gross weight) so loading will need to be just right. This trailer has a large rear storage area which allows me to balance out the hitch as needed using a purpose built hitch scale.

I also purchased an Equalizer hitch for the new trailer which for the un initiated functions as both a weight distribution hitch and sway control at the same time. DO NOT let any RV or boat dealer talk you into something that exceeds your hitch weight or your gross vehicle weight on the basis that a weight distribution hitch will magically increase your capability. I did a ton of research and all of the reputable trailer companies and the hitch manufacturers stressed adhering to the manufacturer limits regardless of what a sales guy might say. Not to mention if you did have a frame problem Infiniti would not have to honor the warranty!

THE drive:

On the way there I was towing my trade in. While I had a simple clamping type sway control the vehicle did feel a bit tippy and odd at times. Not at all dangerous or out of control but independent rear suspension and this setup induced some quirky feelings. As for engine power I must say it was a complete non issue with this trailer, I could barely feel it back there and I could accelerate very quickly if needed. Gas mileage was fairly good at anywhere from 9.2MPG to 11.5 MPG averages going around 65 MPH. Hills and headwinds seemed to dominate my outcome for mileage.

On the return trip with the Equalizer hitch the vehicle actually behaved much better in spite of the significantly higher weight of the new trailer. Power was still a non issue with the QX56. While crossing Kansas I encountered some very high wind gusts in the neighborhood of around 35-40 MPH that hit me dead to the side. With a longer trailer and an SUV with a short wheelbase I was seriously considering pulling over but to my surprise it handled the winds very well. I would not call it a relaxed drive during this section but the sway control did its job and the rig never got into an oscillation. With lower winds it was a dream to drive. Gas mileage was slightly better on the return which I can chalk up to a 4 PSI increase in tire pressure or possibly the more aerodynamic front profile of the new trailer or just dumb luck.

If anyone has any questions feel free to ask.

Darrin

Darrin - I'll second your towing experience. We own a 29' Jayco BH, that weights in around 5500lbs dry. I used to two this with my 1500 HEMI RAM until last summer which we traded in the truck on the 2011 QX. I've been pleasantly surprised at the towing ability of the QX and actually think it does a better job than the truck did. About the only thing I really notice in difference is the softer suspension tends to 'bounce' a bit more if you get on a washboard patch in the road. Overall though I feel very comfortable towing with the QX and don't regret my use of it as a tow vehicle. I'll have to admit though we do get questioned more than once at the campgrounds about 'how we got here with just that SUV..." We've done one long track from Chicago into the Smoky Mountains which was about a 9hr pull last summer. This summer it's a bit closer to home for us most trips being within the 5-8hr range.

Mike,

Are you using weight distribution on your setup?

Yes, I have the reese cam setup for my weight distribution/sway control. The only tricky part is to make sure that you turn off the vehicle when loading, the airbags work better when the sense the extra load at the start of the QX.

Funny I was thinking of trying to figure what fuse to pull as my LR3 suspension would move with the key in or not. So it sounds like I can just leave the key out to do the weight distribution setting first?

Yea, that's the trick on the air suspension. I always now shut the car off while I hookup the weight distribution. Once your connected when you start the car it will adjust for the new weight.

2013 Qx56

I'm new at purchasing an Infiniti product. But I'm getting a Qx56 and I think I'll just wait for the 2013 model, I was on Edmunds Insideline today and the 2013 is getting plenty new features. It's going to have a Moving Object Detection system, also new are standard auto-dimming exterior mirrors and a new Smoky Quartz exterior color. An upgraded remote control and interface is added to the optional Theater package. Can't wait!

I just picked up a 2011 Infinity QX56 and it tows like a dream compared to my 2006 Toyota Sequoia. I'm towing a 23 foot travel trailer with a dry weight of 4700 pounds. The Sequoia has a 4.6L V8 but felt sluggish and really lacking power going up hill. The 5.6L QX has more than enough power to handle uphill towing. At times on the highway I would catch myself going 75 mph but it felt like 55 mpg. The QX56 is one smooth towing SUV!

Towing

I just towed with the QX56 for the first time last weekend on a trip to Yosemite. The QX tows like a dream! The trailer dry weight is 4700 pounds and with gear was probably close to 5500. At times I could hardly tell the trailer was back there. Had plenty of power going up hills. I bought a Tekonsha brake controller and the plug was already prewired in the QX so it was a very easy install. Good tip on hooking up the trailer with the car off and turning on to let adjust after hook up.

Brake Controller Prewiring

Where is the pre-wired brake controller plug on your QX? Was it taped into a harness? dangling off a main harness? mounted under the dash? Thanks

If I recall it was under the drivers side dash centrally located near the lower edge of the steering column.

Best,
Darrin
