Hello all,

I am trying to get information from our dealer on where (and if) the factory plug is located under the dash. So far two weeks in and no luck. I need to get this operational soon so I can use this as a tow vehicle.

If anyone has experience on installing a brake controller your help would be greatly appreciated.

Best,
Darrin

I have a brake controller installed on my QX. It was done by the dealer as I understand there is no 'plug' and it has to be wired in. I don't have a lot of details on it since it's all hidden behind the kick panel.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. That is discouraging news and strange as Tekonsha has a wiring harness for my controller that claims to be plug and play but perhaps not.

Anyone else?

Best,
Darrin

hmm, now you have me wondering. mine is a 2011 and I know they had to wire it in after getting some harness wish I could see up there..

ok, doing some quick searching and you're right there is an adapter. I have the Tekonsha P3 controller installed. Let me see if tonight I can trace the wire up at all and give you an area too look at..

OK i found out the information. There is in fact a factory plug under the dash just near the brake pedal. You can see it and access it without removing the kick panel.

I am installing it in a few so I will advise what I find out.

Nice! Now I'm sure I paid 1hr labor for some guy to find what you did as well :o

oh, and glad to see another QX'er that's going to be using it for towing. What are you towing? any previous tow experience to compare against?

I tow a 28' Travel Trailer, weight is about 6500lbs, you know it's there but this tows amazingly well. my previous tow vehicle was a Dodge Ram 1500 w/ Hemi. I think the QX does better overall, just the softer suspension is a little more bouncy.

Got the controller installed and mounted the P3 in the center console so I won't tear it off with my knee.

I am towing a 4000 lb 22 ft trailer and the previous vehicle was the Land Rover Lr3. The Rover did "OK" but would struggle with the Rockies a bit too much for me. After extensive research the QX56 ended up being the best overall choice for our needs. We plan on getting a larger trailer in a year or two and the 6500 lb range is what we are looking at. how is your mileage?

you cats should post up a photo where its located so others down stream will have an idea.

on the armada for example, it was tucked behind the lower dash finisher below the steering wheel. removing that little piece exposed the adapter.

Get about 10-12mpg towing, glad to know about the LR3. That was my original pick before finding the Infiniti. When they found out weight and length the dealer said the LR3 wouldn't do it - wasn't designed to tow that much.

I will do my best to get under and attempt to snap some photos but the area is hard to get to for me (6'3"tall).

To describe it for someone attempting to install brake controller is fairly straight forward. I have a Tekonsha P3 and they (Tekonsha) do sell a compatible wire harness to make it plug and play. The factory plug is tucked up near the brake pedal and can be accessed without removing underdash cover. Just get up underneath with your wire harness and look for the corresponding receptacle.

I opted to mount the P3 under the armrest as I found the area below the steering wheel to tight for me. The P3 can be mounted vertically so it was not a problem but check with your specific model of brake controller to verify mounting orientation. I take no responsibility for improper installation based on the information given here.

Best,
Darrin
