This is a 2008 QX56. Wife tried to start the rig last night and it turned over, but she said her hand slipped off the ignition switch before the truck started. She tried again and got nothing.
I checked the battery, it seemed okay 12.7v, but only read 7.7V when trying to start. I decided to replace anyways. No help. Starter was clicking, but not cranking.
I decided to turn the motor by hand from front crank pulley before pulling the intake off to get at the starter. I found I can't turn the engine, seems like it's locked up. The oil level in the engine is at full, fresh oil change about 7-8 days ago, Car has been driven every day.
Anything simple that can prevent the engine from rotating? Everything I can think of, is bad news.
I removed the starter and found the starter gear was jammed on the fly wheel. When I pulled the starter out, a second later the starter gear "snapped' back to recess position.
I am guessing the wife tried to start it the second time while the flywheel was still spinning from the first start attempt.
I can replace the starter to be safe, no problem there. However, I found that two teeth on the flywheel had been slightly damaged. One about 1/4 the width of the tooth, and the other about 1/3 the width of the tooth.
It looks as though the starter gear will engage deeper then the damaged area, and obviously it should only start on this location of the flywheel periodically (1 in 100 starts?).
How serious is this? Should I likely be fine just cleaning up the the two teeth a little and installing the new starter? I can't remove the flywheel, I would have to pay big dollars for that kind of service.
