I have a '98 Infiniti I30 that seems to have trouble starting on the first try. The engine turns ok, but does not even attempt to start even after 5 or 6 seconds. Then I can turn the key of for a few seconds then it starts. I've already replaced the fuel filter. Any ideas?

Similar problem

I have a similar problem on my 98. It will intermittently not start on the first try, but will always start on the second time. Everything has checked out fine from the mechanic (Grease Monkey) so I'm not sure what the issue could be.

I'm now wondering if I have a fuel delivery problem. Sometimes after taking off, it begins to "buck & kick" for a few seconds and then smooths out like its starving for fuel. May try to check fuel pressure regulator and maybe fuel pump pressure if I can.

I have the same problem as well on my 96. Not sure what this means mechanically, but I have found that turning the key to the "on" position for a second or so will result in the car starting on the first try.

Found out that the "bucking and kicking" was the new MAF sensor that I just installed. Put the original back on and that problem went away. Still think that my fuel pressure may be a little low or the pressure regulator a little wierd. The other thing that bugs me is the constant 0325 code (knock sensor). I've been told that this only retards the timing momentarily, but I'm beginning to wonder if its not retarding it all the time causing poor performance.

Could not get the knock sensor out. Cut the wires and installed the new one temporarily just to see if the 0325 code would go away. Took it for a test drive. So far, no 0325. Will find out more tomorrow. Ordered a flex-head 3/8" air ratchet. Hopefully, that will get the old knock sensor out without having to pull the plenum.

I have had slow starting for years; but turning the key on for a few seconds before going to "start" always worked. I have set knock sensor codes for years also. I replaced the sensor and short cable from another engine, but put it under an readily available intake plenum/manifold bolt.

Recommend waiting

I've found that letting the key wait on the on position will always start my car. I've talked to a car guy who thinks it may be sediment, from refuels with lower quality gas, clogging the fuel pump. He recommends using only premium gas.

Saftey Switch?

Did you ever try the Neutral Safety Switch/Backup Light Switch? I had a similar problem with my 2000 I30 - plenty of power and whatnot, but intermittently no power to the starter. If I put in gear and back into park, it would start right up - but it got worse over time. I got the part at NAPA for about $35, put it on ramps and found it on the front of the transaxle. Needed to remove a few air dam screws and there it was. Replacing was pretty easy once I figured out where it was. Totally fixed the issue. Not bad for $35. I had to buy one of those really small 1/4 ratchets to get at the top screw, so that was a little annoying, but still, that was less than $6 and still saved me about $150.
