Can anyone give me a ballpark expected cost if I had my local mechanic replace these?

If not, I've got a good friend who does quite a bit of his own maintenance who'd probably be up for the task.

If I went that route, any recommendations on parts? I.E. brand/manufacturer?

I was going to take a jump and go for Eibach street lowering kit. Its not extreme but it does give results apparantley. If not for those, i guesss i would go for stock manufacturing struts and shocks.

I changed mine, (front) myself. Only the cost of the struts & strut mounts. My labor was free ;) It's probably about 2-3 hours of labor plus your parts. I don't know what the labor rates are in your area but it only takes a few phone calls to find out. Compare a few shops via the phone. I got my parts at autozone - all stock replacements. the struts were around $40 each I think and the strut mounts about $12 each. You might not need new strut mounts but I did. Oh if you do it your self you can borrow the spring compressor from autozone too.

Good luck.

shock changed

have you done the change yet?

If you intend to keep the car for long time it is worthwhile to put the good parts into it.
For that matter I had a set of german Bilsteins made to fit my car. I think the cost was around $2000 about 5 years ago, but worth every penny......
And i just bought a Q45 and parked the I30.
So they are up for sale.
