Timing chain recall 2011+ QX56

Just to give some balance to this thread, I had both cats and the timing chain recall done under warranty (fortunately). If either had not been covered, I might have had a pretty bad impression as well. However, my deal has always provided exemplary service. Knock on wood, the QX just passed 125k and is running as strong as day 1. We just completed a 750 mile round trip with 5 people, piles of gear, a roof carrier, and a 7,500 lb boat in tow for the holiday weekend. Not many vehicles can do that in as much style as the QX.
 
well of course you will read about issues on forums because thats what most people sign up for. most folks dont post up to say "wow this car is great! I just wanted to sign up and say that"..?;-)

usually no end to these types of bulitients. just call the dealer, give them your vin and they will let you know if the service has been done.

and you say "is it really worth it". well is what really worth it? getting the service done or the car?

in my opinion BOTH are worth it.

ive a 2012 and had the service done. other than my engine getting some antifreeze splatter on some parts (messes with my OCD!) the engine has been well. and this was over a year ago.


if you are afraid the car will break down based on all the negative reports you have read , then i encourage you to return the car if you have a grace period and walk away. life is too short bro.. :)

Does anyone know when this recall expires. I just bought a 2012 qx56 on 6/20/17. I've just read about so many problems after the repair is it really worth it?

We'll I will agree with our members in saying that like any other car or truck proper maintenance is going to be your friend. I had my timing chain done a little over a year ago. I have taken plenty of trips one being a trip from Florida to Detroit and back. I try to do all the maintenance when it is called for and if I find an issue with the truck I usually try to take care of it as soon as possible, either by myself or let the dealer handle it. You have to keep in mind these trucks are built like tanks and any used truck you get, you must consider if that truck was abused or not properly maintained. Before you buy always get it check out thoroughly to make sure there are no hidden issues but plan accordingly if issues do arise. I have not had any issues after the repair, they did a really good job in making sure it was done right. You have to be confident in the tech\ dealer who is performing the job. Ask for a senior tech to perform the repairs to make sure it is done right the first time. I hope this helps
 
Hello all first post here!

I am taking my 2011 Q56 to Pepe Infiniti for the timing chain recall on Dec 15th.

I am going to have them change the water pump and serpentine belt as well since the labor if free and I'll only have to pay for the parts.

Does anyone have any suggestions for other parts that they would change since so much of the front end is wide open?

In a mailed "owner notification" I was sent directly from Infiniti mine states "Infiniti is committed to providing the highest levels of product safety, quality and client satisfaction. With that in mind, we want to bring to your attention important information regarding a voluntary service campaign that is being conducted by Infiniti until February 27, 2018 to replace the engine timing chain on your vehicle."

I just took my 2012 in this morning for the "service campaign" and my service consultant also confirmed Infiniti is only doing this until February 2018.

Timing off, motor shot, timing chain already replaced under warranty

I purchased a 2011 QX56 with 100K miles, timing chain replaced under warranty at 80k miles, oil changes done at proper frequencies. 107k miles and the dealer is telling me UPDATE: I have to broken sprockets, $4300 to replace. Would these not have been changed during the first timing chain repair at 80k?

Service rep told me this normally happens from not changing the oil. Very odd, i brought the car to the dealer after purchasing for an oil change and a once over, they said everything looked great. Then last week, the "service oil and filter" message came on. I found it odd, but assumed someone simply didn't reset the computer. Is it possible they didn't change the oil? I feel like I'm getting ripped off for sure.

anything is possible.

i don't know if the sprockets are to be replaced. you can look at the bulletin on the recall and read everything that is to be replaced (there is even a video on youtube showing whats done). i don't recall reading that those were to be replaced or else they would be. it would be no cost for the dealer since they are getting paid from nissan so they would be happy to do it if it needed it.

sounds like the previous owner(s) didn't maintain the car properly. the gine in these cars (DIG) are designed to be DRIVEN, and not used as grocery haulers or mall trollers. that causes sludge and can gunk up the engine.
 
The cam sprockets are not replaced, but the crank sprockets do get replaced. I have done the repair personally.
 
its a design flaw in the timing guides and oil jets. that link I sent to you has some nice explanations form actual infiniti techs.
I just purchased a used 2011 QX56 that is not part of the voluntary recall. I confirm that with infiniti consumer affairs by the VIN number.It has 103,000 mi on it and no symptoms I'm trying to understand how any vehicle could escape being recalled according to the explanation above. Could some of the oil passages be overdrilled out of tolerance and some not? Or should all QX56s and this year range be treated as ticking time bombs in your opinion?
 
nissan could have found out the issue and modified some vehicles on the line. my car was a part of the recall but the shop said my engine did not have the issue, but they replaced the parts anyway.

Let me ask the question this way. Anyone have a 2011-2013 QX56 with over 200,000 miles that did not have to have a timing chain replaced? The reason I ask is I just purchased a used 2011 QX56 that was not affected by the timing chain recall that only has 100,000 mi on it. It is in mint condition that was garage kept. I love the vehicle but did not know there were timing chain recall issues with this model. I'm debating on selling it, or keeping it based on responses to this question. Infiniti consumer affairs and the infiniti dealership service managers are essentially useless on explanations of why my vehicle was not affected. They do not even know the root cause of whether it was a timing chain defect or if it was caused by a lack of lubrication. The service manager at infinity told me today that it was because the timing chains were not beefy enough and that the recall replaced them with more heavy duty timing chains. If that were the case, all of these models would have been recalled. I believe based on my reading of the forums that it was due to improper fit of some of the oils jets resulting in oil bypassing the jets that were supposed to spray lubrication onto the timing chains resulting in the chains stretching over time. This particular vehicle that I have may not have had its engine manufactured in the range where the defect was generated. But not sure since no one from Infiniti can give me a sensible, verifiable answer. That is why I'm posting this question to the users. Thanks in advance for any replies.
 
nissan realized there was an issue in a certain range of vins but not all the vins were affected. my 2012 was on the list but the techs told me my car did not have the issues. they did it anyway. it was around 50k miles i had it done and i sold it at around 96k in 2020. never had an issue with my qx in any way. it was also garage kept and you could eat off the floor. i drove it like i stole it and it was my daily driver. these cars were designed to be driven as they are based off the patrol. the ones that stayed in the garage and just did grocery hauling and soccer mom duties were the ones that had issues.
its up to you if you feel you should sell it or not. i will say if you plan on driving it intermittently, i would just sell it as that would not be healthy. the DI engine likes to be driven.
 
I still would like to know if anyone has a qx56 2011 through 2013 model that has up to 200,000 mi on it that was not affected by the timing chain recall and did not have a timing chain replaced.

I had cat and timing chain issues with my used 2011. About $6K for the chain, traded it instead of replacing the cats. I bought it with 94K miles. It lasted me about 50K more miles.

Thanks for that good info. Did it have a recall on it? Or was it unaffected by the recall? And did you get 50,000 mi on it before you had to replace the timing chain?

Just an FYI to any of you that had the same question. I was able to get an answer to my question by talking to an infiniti service technician that indicated to me he had serviced many QX56s that were unaffected by the recall that had not had to have a timing chain replacement. Additionally, I filtered QX56's with high mileage on auto trader and looked at their Carfax reports and was able to see many that had made it above 200,000 miles that had not had to have a timing chain replacement. So, I feel much better about owning one that was unaffected by the recall. My wife has since decided she wants a smaller SUV and we're going that route. But I have concluded that these are solid vehicles based on this information and the one that I have with everything completely functional at 100,000 mi.
 
I have a 2011 qx56 my timing chain needed to replaced I took it to Infinity for them to diagnose it if there is a recall on it why didn't they fix it

be advised if you did this after a certain time, the recall wont cover it.



INFINITI has made multiple attempts to notify clients concerning this service campaign and is now
informing them that the campaign will end February 28, 2018. INFINITI wants to inform retailers to
open repair orders on or before February 27, 2018 in order to have timing chain replacement covered by
this service campaign. Vehicles presented for repair after this date will not be covered by this service
campaign and any repair will be performed at client expense if the vehicle’s warranty has expired.
