I was curious to know if anybody else with a 2011 or 2012 QX has had numerous issues with being stranded. We bought our QX new in October 2010. Over the past 8 months our truck has stranded my wife and kids not once, not twice, but three times requiring it to be towed to the dealer each time. As a result of this last failure the dealer is telling me it needs a new engine. A new engine on my 18 month old Infiniti?!?!? I have tried to get Infiniti to buy it back but they won't budge. In fact, the whole customer service process has been a very bad experience for us. At this point I am out of my truck for what will be 2+ weeks. I was given a G sedan to drive...so trying to figure out how I will fit 5 kids plus me and my wife in a G. Don't think that will work very well. Now we have a $68,000 truck that neither one of us can trust...and Infiniti seemingly is not at all concerned. This is our first Infiniti....and what a horrible experience it has been. Any suggestions??

welcome.

when you have been stranded, what has occurred?

did the engine try and turn over?

was the starter engaging?

how were you able to get it to finally crank up after the 3 attempts?

could be a fault in the engine.

cam position sensor

IPDM

could be a fault in the ECM.

could be anything. need more detailed info on what is happening when this occurs.

can you repeat the steps to PREVENT the car from starting? any common denominators across each time this happened?

when the car is driving, does it drive fine? any hesitation whilst driving?

why is the dealer telling you it needs a new engine? what are they basing this on? what criteria?

each time this even occurred, was it the same solution each time to get it to finally start up?

nissan will be hard to convince to buy back. you need to find out if its an engine issue from the factory before they will even play ball with you.

do you do your own oil changes? if so, do you have the paperwork? any other modifications done to the car AFTER the sale? receipts?

ive not EVER EVER heard of this event happening to a brand new nissan/infiniti truck (Cant speak for the sedans). im a pretty big nissan fanboy and have been studying the armada since 2006 (have had two armadas and now a 12 qx) and am a member of any popular web forum dedicated to these machines and ive not read an issue like this.

hopefully the members here can shed some light, but it would help if you can be as detailed as possible....

not one darn issue with my QX, other than a flat tire and I'm not to fond of the NAV [because I swear it doesn't understand me when I ask it a question... seems like it displays things wrong on purpose so that I'll scream at it like a maniac].

drives very nice, and my dealer will give me whatever kinda car I want..... so if u want a QX, ask for a damn QX rental replacement.

there's always gonna be one lemon in a group, unfortunately you have the one lemon. but overall, the build quality on these cars/trucks is tops. hopefully when they replace your engine, it will run just fine... just ask for the parts back :P to prove they replaced the whole engine!!!

Yes, someone else had this problem last year. I'll try to find the thread.

hey rough,

did you go thru the training mode? also there are two settings, standard and advanced mode. the latter offers more commands whilst the former offers less commands. its possible, for example, you could be in standard voice command mode but using commands only avail in the advanced mode. there is also a continuous learning mode so you dont have to teach the Q commands all at once.

Sorry it has taken me a few days to reply...it has been a whirlwind with Infiniti. So, Infiniti is replacing the motor under warranty. My truck has 43,000 miles and is 18 months old, so I am most upset that my $68,000 Infiniti needs something as big as a new motor! They have denied the buy back because they say the truck has not had enough time in repair, and the problems have not been serious enough to warrant a buyback. Not sure I know what would qualify as more serious than having to replace a motor!! So, I have been in a G now for a week and my QX is to be ready sometime next week. What I prefer Infiniti to do is to buy it back, but if they won't do that I think they should at least give me a signficant discount on a trade. Is this asking too much? Thoughts on how to approach Infininti at this point?

Your time in for repair, as indicated, was only 3 times and hopefully Infiniti has narrowed the issue down to the motor.

The discount you speak of:
Your old engine has 43,000 miles on it and the new one should be only a few for testing purposes.

I don't believe they will buy back nor provide a significant discount on a newer/same year model. Take out the emotion element and think how big business operates .. profits and the bottom line.

I know when we pay so much for something, as a customer, it's not out of line to want it to work and be reliable. Since this has occurred it's normal to be nervous about it's future reliability.

All just my 2 cents as a 2011 QX56 owner.

BTW: I noticed my driver side door squeaking .. found two bolts were loose and had to re-tighten them. Seems strange for something so expensive to have loose bolts .. but such is life. Nothing mechanical will be 100% .. 100% of the time .. yet it still bugs us to no end.

Here's to hoping better times are ahead for you and yours.

But here is the thing: I have had numerous vehicles that span many manufacturers and have driven hundreds of thousands of miles. Never have I had to replace a motor in one. At 18 months old nobody should have that repair need, and for a premium brand vehicle I think I purchased something more than a mechanical machine. I also purchased an ownership experience. With my vehicle stranding my family 3 times, my ownership experience has been pitiful. Infiniti owes it to me to repair that experience, within reason. And a substantial discount on a new vehicle would be a positive step in restoring my faith in the brand. I don't think that's too much to expect.

New Engine?

Wow ! Hey CNKY, Did it blow a head gasket ? Was it knocking and making terrible valve pinging noises ? Drop a piston or break a rod ?

Crazy dealers don't have anyone that knows anything about motors anymore. Just plug and play or swap parts until it works. Hmmmmmm

Were you emitting blue or black smoke ? Well maybe they can replace a motor, it is a big engine bay it sits in but there are a lot of things that need to be hooked up correctly.

I agree , if it needs a motor, you should be allowed to trade it with a monster allowance. Bummer. I bet the engine alone could be $10k, not counting labor.
strange. My 2011 makes a weird noise in the rear AC unit area sometimes idling and ac off. Its a clicking noise, I havn't tracked it down yet.
Very complex machine, thats for sure !
Hope you get it resolved,
will be watching here to see your reports
