...cable needs replacing, help!!! I have it held in place with two nails currently, don't know how long that would work. The mechanic says the cable itself costs $200 and needs to be ordered. Any known alternatives or work arounds? Thanks.

Coming loose where? Just put a new end on it at the battery - about $5 at the auto parts place.
