My car makes a screeching noise for a few seconds after it's cranked . This only happens when it sits for a long time like overnight, or when I am at work. When I use the car frequently throught the day, i wont have any problems. I dont want to change the drive belts if i dont have to.Can someone please help me?

sounds like you need to adjust the belts.or if one belt (serpentine) change it and check the tensioner..might be worn..(no tension)..

It just needs a serpentine belt. The belt isn't all that expensive, and it is fairly easy to replace. Most cars even have a diagram under the hood that tells you how to install one.

on the 93 j30 its a set of three different belts each with its own tension, that is not automatic, meaning you have to get down and under it to tighten or loosen the tension. I don't know how it is with the 97's but with most vehicles a squealing belt usually means that its too tight, and simple adjustment should take care of it, or let it ware naturally and eventually it will stop.
