I have a question that has me very... stumped. I have a 94 G20 that I have been driving around for awhile for my little brother. He bought it used and has been having trouble with the idle jumping back and from about 750-1500 rpm, in rapid succession, only at idle. I started looking around and found cracked vacuum lines, and that the intake plenum (air) was only mounted with two bolts. I got the manual out, took it all down, cleaned it up, put a new intake gasket on, and remounted the air intake gasket. I cleaned up the butterfly, put a new gasket on there, hooked up the air intake, and started it up. bouncing idle problem is replaced with a new problem. the car idles great, no shudders, no choking, no anything. however, when you give it throttle AT ALL it just dies. period. My bro said when he got the car the timing was advanced as far as it went and he timed it. I checked the timing, right on the mark. however i decided to advance it to see if there was benefit. there was. the car does not die at throttle now. however. at idle it runs great. you give it slight throttle it does. you give it full throttle it sputters for a second then it goes. on the road, if you shift (manual) without giving it gas its fine. if you shit and go at least half throttle its fine. but in the throttle range where you were say, in third gear, going about thirty... the range you would use to maintain that 30 without speeding up... the car just dies. same in any gear, with the throttle in that place (between 1/8 and 1/4 down less, or more than that it's fine. hold in that range and the car seems like it stops getting fuel, and will die if you lie it slow down and stop... give it more or less and it comes back to life. I know the timing needs to be proper. I get that, but my question is what do you guys think would cause this? any ideas where to look, at all? he's a poor kid, and its a cheap car that he will drive until it doesn't drive and it will go to the junker, that's fine. he's not looking to put a lot of money into it. I'm just trying to help him get a few more miles out of the thing... any input appreciated.
